I bought the book based on the Pepsi Cola intro that you can read as a teaser. Now I'm disappointed because the book is a mess and somehow does not seem to know what it wants to be. First of all it does not have much to do with mathematics. It handles real life problems, in some cases engineering problems and in theory those of course often touch mathematics. The book also contains information about computer programing and math often has something to do with that as well. But somehow the book fails to pull it of. It tries to be funny but often is not. It tries to be educational but about 95% is trivial and already revisited a 1000 times. In some places the author drills deep and one wonders why when in other locations he stays right on the surface, quite obviously without any tiny grain of knowledge above that of the laymen. Frustrating. I mean, really, who hasn't already heared that bridges can resonate and that things can break when excited by resonance ? Or is the deviation between the Gregorian and the Julian calender really a math problem ? What can I say, except that it does not entertain me on any level, not as a person who loves math, not as an engineer, most certainly not as a programer and also not as a guy who loves a good joke. The book kept me waiting for the scarce few pieces of information that were indeed surprising and interesting. I guess at an age of 10..12 or so I might have found it entertaining. But at that age I would probably have asked for a lot more information on many topics the book touches.Update: OK, after some reconsiderarion I added a star. The book is not about math or math errors. The book is about human errors in the areas of logic, basic calculations and most of all when avoiding to think things to the end. My disappointment mainly comes because I know the details of 99% of the examples in the book by heart because as an engineer and programmer I am permanently interested in the way humans fail to do things right. I could have come up with exactly that list of examples myself off the top of my head. So why did I buy the book ? Because it has the wrong title. Probably in order to sell more copies it was labled to be about math errors instead of human errors. So now that I know why I'm disappointed why don't I give it four or five stars ? Well, because just listing the examples and philosophying a bit about them is cheap. There are great books out there that use only a small part of these examples but analyze them better, much more systematically and come to practical conclusions. There is a difference in pointing out a weekness and helping people to avoid it. And I may add that I'm not a fan of the modern tendency to distribute responsibility for human mistakes on so many shoulders that in the end nobody is responsible. Sorry, but that's also cheap and it is no path that leads to a reduction in costly mistakes. So I acknowledge that the author assembled that list of examples, but two weeks on YouTube might be enough for that. And what he made of them is still just good enough for three stars in my book. Sorry.
Als großer Matt Parker-Fan ist das Buch natürlich ein Muss. Da er bisher nur drei Bücher geschrieben hat, kommt man da sogar ganz gut mit. Matt Parker hat ein unglaubliches Talent, Mathematik unterhaltsam zu präsentieren und zu zeigen, dass Mathe nicht dass ist, was einem die Schule versucht weiszumachen: langweilig.Matt hat einen eigenen youtube Kanal (standupmaths) und taucht auch öfter auf dem Kanal numberphile auf. Beides Tipps für den interessierten Laien - es macht einfach Spaß im zuzuhören.Das Buch selbst (um das geht es hier schließlich) ist super locker geschrieben und zeigt auf, was in der Welt der Mathematik so alles schiefgehen kann. Von einigen dieser Dinge wird man schon gehört haben, wenn man sich allgemein für Naturwissenschaften interessiert, aber es sind auch ein paar, für mich jedenfalls, neue Dinge dabei. Diese werden unterhaltsam beschrieben und erklärt.Absolut empfehlenswert!

Super witziges Buch, sehr interessant und lehrreich und voller Spaß! Ich hoffe Matt bringt bald einen Nachfolger raus. Klare Kaufempfehlung für alle denen Englisch nichts ausmacht und die Spaß an Mathematik haben ohne Mathe Experten zu sein.
Oder wie ein Kommolitone in einer Übungsvorlesung die Frage an den Dozenten nach üblichen Klausurfehlern kommentierte:"Man kann unendlich viele Fehler machen".Sehr gut geschriebenes Buch. Vielen flüchtig bekannten Geschichten hat der Autor neue Tiefe verliehen.Absolut lesenswert und weiter zu empfehlen.
